Mathematics is one subject that sends shivers down the spines of most students. In the world of Mathematics, excellence, especially globally acknowledged excellence, is a rarity.
So, hats off to this young Ufot Ebong, the 29-year old son of Etinan Local Government, who has taken the difficult world of Mathematics by storm.
He recently unravelled a mathematical equation in Japan which scientists and mathematicians had struggled with for more than 30 years. Most strikingly, this happened only in his first semester at the Tokai University, a prestigious private university in Tokyo, which was founded in 1924.
But Ekong also smashed other records in the University. He achieved a first-class degree in electrical engineering and, wait for it, scored the best marks at the university since 1965.
As expected, academic awards and recognitions have come in torrents. At the last count, the university had honoured him with six awards for academic excellence.
Ekong, the third son of Late Capt Ufot Ekong and Annie Ekong, is an alumnus of Bells Secondary School, Otta in Ogun State.
In addition to English, he speaks French, Japanese, Yoruba and his native Ibibio. He even won a Japanese language award for foreigners. Ekong had since finished his PhD.
