Rt. Hon (Barr.) Nse Ben Ekanem

Rt. Hon. Barr. Nse Ben Ekanem was a pioneer member and the second Speaker of the First Assembly of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly (January 20, 1992 – November 17, 1993). He served as speaker between November 24, 1992 – September 22, 1993. His predecessor was the late Hon. Jimmy Jimmy Ntuen who was the pioneer speaker (January 20 – November 24, 1993). His successor, late Hon. Henry Rapheal Affang, a lawyer served from September 23, 1993 – November 17, 1993.

Born on October 27, 1959 in Utu Ikot Eboro village in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area where he hails from. He started his primary education at the Primary School, Utu Nsekhe/Utu Ikot Eboro but completed it at the Primary School, Abak in 1969. Upon completing his primary education, he proceeded to pursue his secondary education at Holy Family College, Abak, where he obtained his West African School Certificate in 1974.

In 1981, Rt. Hon. Ekanem was admitted into the University of Calabar to study law. He graduated in 1985 with LLB (Hons.) degree and proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, Lagos where he bagged his Barrister at Law (BL) degree and was thereafter called to the Nigerian Bar as Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria on October 15th, 1986. He holds a Masters Degree in Public Order and Information Management (POIM) from the University of Uyo.

In 1991, Rt. Hon. Ekanem contested and won election to represent the people of Utu/Uruk/Ikono State Constituency of Etim Ekpo Local Government Area in the first House of Assembly. When the House was inaugurated in January, 1992, Barr. Ekanem was appointed Chairman, Committee on Justice. The House, under his leadership passed a total number of nine bills.
Rt. Hon. Barr. Nse Ekanem is a former Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association, Uyo branch. He has served as member of the Akwa Ibom State Judicial Service Commission and twice as Chairman of the Law Reform Commission.
