Rev. Fr. Dr. Donatus Ukpong
Teacher and Mental Health Care-giver
Rev. Fr. Dr. Donatus Ukpong is a lecturer in the Department of Religious and Cultural Studies at the University of Uyo but he is also quite famous for his work in mental health. To mark the 10th anniversary of his priestly ordination in 2008, he organized an anniversary dinner which featured a drama sketch where guests were sensitized on the plight of mentally sick people within Uyo.
That dinner provided the launchpad for Mobile Manna Foundation, MMF, the NGO which he founded in 2011. MMF provides world-class mental health care services and since 2012, runs a Mental Health Rehabilitation and Research Centre in Uyo offering both residential and out-patients care. The centre supplements the two conventional mental healthcare facilities in the state – Psychiatric Hospital, Eket, and Mental Health Department, University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, Uyo. It also runs regular sensitization programmes on drug abuse and mental health issues.
Akwa Ibom celebrates Dr. Ukpong and his commitment to the mental health and wellbeing of the less-privileged amongst us.
