Professor Eno Ebenso, is the third most prolific author and scholar in the field of Corrosion Inhibition, with research interest spanning through physical chemistry (electrochemistry, kinetics, adsorption, thermodynamics of corrosion – extensive researches on corrosion inhibition in different media using electrochemical, gravimetric, gasometrical and thermometric methods; synergistic and antagonistic studies. Plant extracts, exudate gums, polymers, ionic liquids, synthetic organic and inorganic compounds have been investigated as inhibitors. Quantum chemical / molecular modelling and theoretical studies of compounds used for corrosion inhibition studies using density functional theory (DFT) and other semi-empirical methods, solid-state chemistry/contemporary materials chemistry and physics (thin film deposition using nebulized spray pyrolysis technique). He is currently interested in using some quantum chemical methods like density functional theory (DFT) and other semi-empirical methods to study corrosion inhibition efficiencies of compounds/ surface analysis and interface reactions; extensive quantitative structure activity relationship studies (QSAR); Molecular dynamics/ Monte Carlo Simulation studies. He has also published papers on electrochemical sensors for detection of neurotransmitters and thermodynamics of solutions.
Born on November 18, 1964 at Nung Atai Odobo-Okobo, Akwa Ibom State, Prof. Ebenso holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of Calabar, an M.Sc in Physical Chemistry from the University of Ibadan and a PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Calabar. He started his teaching career at the University of Calabar when he joined in 1990 as Assistant Lecturer. He did his post-doctoral fellowship at the Institute of Materials Research, Darmstadt, Germany on 2006. He became a full professor and Head of the Department of Chemistry, North-West University, Mmabatho, South Africa between 2009 and 2011. He was Executive Dean Faculty of Agriculture, Science and Technology of the same University between 2012 and 2015. Between 2015 and 2017, he served as Acting Rector, Research and Planning and in July 2017, he was appointed Executive Dean.
Prof. Ebenso has also won research grants from the National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa, Scientific Research Committee of Turkey, Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). He is a member of the editorial board of the following journals namely ‘Research Journal of Chemical Sciences’, ‘Journal of Materials and Environmental Sciences’, ‘Recent Patents on Corrosion Science, International Journal of Materials and Chemistry, Journal of Chemical Acta, Advances in Materials and Corrosion, Journal of Applied Chemistry, Journal of Theoretical Chemistry.
He was recognized as the most Internationally cited researcher in 2010 in the North-west University, South Africa and International leadership in research in 2011. He is a visiting Scientific Fellow Turkey, tenable at the Department of Chemistry, Kocaeli University Turkey.
