Professor Charles Uko
Professor Charles Uko is a Civil/Construction Engineer and Scholar of national and international repute. Son of teacher – parents, he has always loved scholarship and felt a natural pull to the world of academics where he has set many academic records right from primary school where he emerged the best in mathematics in the regional exams. He graduated First Class and the best graduating student in Civil Engineering at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 1978. Post -NYSC, he worked for one year at MRT Consulting Engineers, Maiduguri supervising the construction of power stations, pump stations and power transmission lines. He won the Commonwealth Scholarship to pursue an MSc programme in Construction Engineering at the University of Leeds (UK) in 1980, and completed the course with Distinction in 1981. Still under scholarship, he commenced a doctoral degree in Structural Engineering at Leeds University and completed it in 1984.
Between 1984 and June 1988, Prof. Uko worked as a lecturer at the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Port Harcourt. During those years he was involved in a number of teaching, design and supervision engagements. In July 1988, Prof. Uko, an indigene of Nsit Ubuim Local Government was appointed Commissioner for Lands and Housing in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State by Col. J. T. Ogbeha. He went on to also serve in the regimes of Col. G. O. Abbe and Group Captain Idongesit Nkanga. In 1992, he returned to the University of Port Harcourt and by 1993 he was promoted Senior Lecturer. In 1995, Prof. Uko joined the University of Uyo as the pioneer lecturer in the Faculty of Engineering. In February 1998, he joined the Petroleum (Special) Trust Fund [PTF] and worked there till August 1999 when he joined the Special Projects Unit of the Presidency, from where he moved to serve as the Technical Assistant to the Executive Director [PROJECTS] in the Niger Delta Development Commission, [NDDC], a position he resigned May 2002 to return to his first love, academics.
Prof. Uko returned to the University of Uyo in June 2002 as the Acting Head of Department of Civil Engineering. In 2003, he was promoted to Associate Professor and in 2007 he became a Professor of Structural Engineering. He was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Engineering in 2010. His proven track record of excellence lead to the Faculty of Engineering being granted full accreditation by the National Universities Commission (NUC). Between 2011 and 2012, he was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration of the University of Uyo.
He is a registered engineer with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria [COREN]. He is also a member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers and the American Concrete Institute. Professor Uko was the Vice President of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria [COREN] from 2013 to 2016. He has served as a consultant on many road, building and bridge projects and has also developed a computer software for Concrete Mix Design [COMBA] using the Nigerian Concrete Mix Design Manual published by COREN. He has several academic works to his name.
