Prof Sunday W Peters
The lot on who to run the newly established Akwa Ibom State University ( AKSU) fell on Prof Sunday William Peters, a Professor of Petroleum Geology.
As first Vice-Chancellor of the new University, he brought his administrative acumen to bear, setting a good foundation on which the University is still building on.
He came to the position from the University of Calabar, Unical, where he been since 1982, the year he was made a Professor. At Unical, he was twice Head of Department of Geology (1982 to 1984 and 1986 to 1989), Dean, Faculty of Science ( 1985 to 1989) and Dean, Postgraduate School( 1990 to 1993). He was also Chairman of the Committee of Deans between 1988 and 1989.
Prof Peters won the prestigious J F Kennedy Scholar award in 1965 as a student of Etinan Institute where he did his School Certificate and Higher School Certificate between 1959 and 1965. He proceeded to the University of Ibadan where he bagged a Bachelor’s degree in Geology in 1969. At the Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA, which he attended between 1971 and 1975, he bagged the Masters of Philosophy ( M.Phil) and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.
Prof Peters started work with Shell Petroleum as an Assistant Paleontologist in 1969. He left for further studies in 1971, serving as a Teaching Assistant through his studies at Rutgers University. Back to Nigeria, he was offered employment at the Ahmadu Bello University in 1975 as Lecturer. He moved to his alma mater in 1976. By the time he left Ibadan for Calabar in 1982, he was already a Reader.
Before AKSU, Prof Peters had served Akwa Ibom State as a member of the Uyo Capital City Development Authority ( UCCDA) between 1988 and 1989. He was also Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Taskforce on Soil and Land Use Surveys during the same period.
He is a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geology, the Nigeria Association of Petroleum Explorationists and the Nigeria Association for Mining and Geosciences.
Author of the book Regional Geology of Africa, Prof Peters is a public affairs analyst, newspaper columnist and public orator who served as University orator at the University of Calabar for many years.
