Prof Dorothy Udo Umoatan has made history as the first female Professor of Law to come out of Akwa Ibom and Cross River States.
Prof. Dorothy Udo Umoatan, the Ibiono ibom born lawyer, now an indigene of Mkpat Enin by marriage, made this history after the University of Uyo Senate on Monday 28th September 2020 announced her promotion to the rank of a Professor.
Prof. Umoatan had her Bachelor of Law Degree (LLB) in 1997 and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1998 upon completion of the compulsory one year programme in the Nigerian Law School, Lagos. She further enrolled in the University of Uyo Postgraduate School for a Masters Degree in the same legal field with a speciality in the coveted International Law and Jurisprudence and bagged the Degree in 2005.
Umoatan furthered her academic interest when she opted for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in her field and enrolled in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka where she bagged the intended Degree in Property and Commercial Law in 2009, hence, becoming the first Akwa Ibom woman to reach the doctorate level in the legal field.
She had her first work experience with the Bauchi State Police Command between 1998 and 1999 during her national youth service, after which she joined the University of Uyo in 2001 as Administrative Officer and rose to the position of Assistant Registrar. Given her interest in teaching, research as well as community service, she joined the Law Faculty in the same institution in 2005 when she began her lecturing career.
The intelligent female academic is a member in some professional bodies such as the Nigerian Bar Association, Association of Nigerian Universities Professional Administrators, Nigerian Institute of Management (Chattered), and the National Association of Law Teachers.
Umoatan also has more than a handful of academic journals and articles to her credit and before her recent professorial feat. She is the Director, Centre for Gender Studies at the University of Uyo. She is married to Akparawa Udo Sam Umoatan – a former Chairman of Mkpat Enin LG Council and Chairman of ALGON who served the area during the reign of Obong Victor Attah as Governor of the state.
