Paul ‘Sports’ Bassey
Aside from the late legendary Mr Football, Oyo Orok Oyo, it stands to be controverted that Paul ‘Sports’ Bassey is the only other Nigerian thick in the politics, technical know-how and administration of both the Confederation of African Football, CAF and the Federation of International Football Associations, FIFA.
He has served both bodies as Media Officer, Coordinator, Committee member, Instructor in Club Licensing and Match Commissioner, the same positions he has also held in the Nigeria Football Federation.
Paul started out as a Sports Reporter at the Nigerian Chronicle in 1977. By 1981, he had become the newspaper’s Sports Editor. By 1986, he was appointed Sports Editor of The Punch. Champion Newspaper poached him from The Punch in 1991 and appointed him Group Sports Editor and later, a Deputy General Manager. He would later leave to establish Today’s Sport, one of the pioneers of sports newspaper publishing in Nigeria.
He’s one of the best and most-read Nigerian sports columnist and was Anchor of one of the most followed television programmes in sport, Master Sports.
Through his foray into sports marketing, the impactful Akwa Ibom State/Mobil/NNPC Field and Track Championship for Secondary Schools in the state was born. Now in its 15th year, the championship has been a production mill for the nation’s future athletic power house. Some of its products are already Nigerian, African champions and record breakers.
In 2015, Paul was appointed by Governor Udom Emmanuel as Senior Special Assistant on Sports and Chairman, Akwa United Football Club. Within four years of his role as Chairman, the club has been on the upswing, winning two trophies as a pointer.
The Eket born multiple award winner attended St Finbarr’s Secondary School, Akoka, Yaba, Lagos, the University of Calabar, the University of Grenoble, France and the University of Lagos. He is also a member of the Nigeria Institute of Management ( Chartered).
