Obonganwan Grace Ekong
Experienced Woman Leader
Obonganwan Grace Ekong has had a distinguished public service career, culminating in her appointment as Secretary to the State Government by then Governor Victor Attah.
Before then, she had served variously as Senior Education Officer, Federal Ministry of Education ( 1974 to 1980), Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC( 1980 to 1990), Director General (equivalent of Permanent Secretary), Akwa Ibom State Government ( 1992 to 1994), Executive Secretary, Akwa Ibom State Economic Advisory and Intelligence Committee ( 1994 to 1996) and Director, United Nations Development Programme in Akwa Ibom State ( 1996).
A community enthusiast, Obonganwan Ekong served as the pioneer Financial Secretary of the Akwa Ibom Community in Lagos between 1987 and 1992. She was awarded the Chieftaincy title of Obonganwan Eduek by the Itu Traditional Council in 1993.
A great mobiliser and promoter of women and child rights, she was a Board member of the Family Support Programme between 1994 and 1996. She’s also author of the work Women of Akwa Ibom: Their Activities, Achievement, Problems and Prospects.
Obonganwan attended the Michigan State University, USA for her Bachelor’s and Masters degree before returning to Nigeria in 1973.
