Nathaniel Bassey created songs that have become part of the Nigerian heritage. He then founded a prayer movement-
HallelujahChallenge, which has become an iconic worship brand and landmark event. It started with an open invitation to Christians to join in one-hour of worship from 12:00 am to 1:00 am. It streamed on Instagram. Riding on the wings of the faith and passion of the collective, the HallejuahChallenge moved mountains. Testimonies followed.
Hallelujah Challenge commenced as a 30-day midnight praise challenge running through June 2017. It attracted over 100, 000 participants from all over the world. It now runs on Instagram Live as well as Facebook Live and extends to YouTube.
It took just under a month for the Hallelujah Challenge to attract over 600, 000 worshippers. It became part of social lore. Christians across denominations joined in. It grew such that in 2020, it held from 4 to 24 February.
Nathaniel Bassey has 1.9m followers on Instagram. Such is the force and attraction of his music and ministry. He was born in the megacity if Lagos in 1978 and developed a cosmopolitan and broad outlook. No wonder his popular songs are Imela, in Igbo, as well as “Onise Iyanu” and “Olowogbogboro” in Yoruba. His corpus includes so many worship songs that Christians now use across the country for devotions. Nathaniel Bassey hails from Akwa Ibom State and is proud of his origins. Akwa Ibom is proud of the exploits of this darling son.
Nathaniel Bassey is a graduate of the University of Lagos. He also graduated from the Rhodes Orchestra where he mastered the horns. His Christian root is the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).
