Mr. Umana Okon Umana

Umana Okon Umana, former Secretary to the Akwa Ibom State Government, epitomizes the words of Essayist, Ralph Waldo Emerson, who said that Every great institution is the lengthened shadow of one single man. His character determines the character of the organisation. Mr. Umana has cast his shadow of excellence in service delivery, dedication to duty and patriotism in the various offices he has occupied as a civil servant and politician in Akwa Ibom and beyond. He has distinguished himself as a teacher, Director of Budget; Permanent Secretary, Budget office and Commissioner for Finance in the state. He has carried this streak of excellent service above all other things to his current office as Managing Director of Nigeria Oil and Gas Free Zones Authority, where he has turned the hitherto unknown agency into a minefield of investment and growth.

Mr. Umana Okon Umana was born in Calabar on August 20, 1959. He was educated at the St. Patrick College, Ikot Ansa Calabar, after which he proceeded to the University of Calabar, where he bagged a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and an MBA in Finance. He is Fellow Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria. Mr. Umana has also attended various management courses, including the Driving Government Performance Program at the Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard University; the Public-Private Partnership and Project Finance Program at the International Law Institute (ILI), Washington DC.; the Senior Executive Program at London Business School, the Columbia Senior Executive Program at the Columbia Business School, New York; and the Modernising Government Program at RIPA International London.

Umana has since his appointment in 2016 as the MD/CEO of OGFZA, in his characteristic manner, transformed the agency to its current ranking as the number one agency in Nigeria in Ease of Doing Business Index. Under him, OGFZA received the Award of Excellence in Productivity and Innovation in e-government from the National Productivity Centre and Bespoke Free Zone Incentives Award 2017 as well as the Free Zone of the Year Award 2018, by the fDi Magazine (a publication of the Financial Times of London).
