On her appointment as acting director general of the Securities and Exchange Commission, SEC, March 2018, Mary Uduk’s primary task was to take necessary steps to ensure effective regulation of the Nigerian capital market and make the Nigerian investment space attractive to global and domestic investors, despite the nation’s economic challenges. She accomplished it within one year, leading to clamour that she be confirmed substantive head of the 47-year old commission. Stakeholders applauded Uduk and her management for sustaining investor confidence, instilling discipline in transactional processes in the bourse and enlightening investors on emerging trends in the global investment space.
Although she was not confirmed to the position, her laudable footprints will last for always. Since joining SEC in 1986 as an assistant financial analyst, Mary has played prominent roles in its growth. Known for her discipline and strict adherence to rules, Mary served as the pioneer Head of the Operations Division in the Lagos Zonal Office, and has headed the departments of Internal Control, Investment Management, Financial Standards and Corporate Governance and Securities, and Investment Services, among others.
During the 2005-2007 banking and insurance industry consolidations, she played a leading role, managing the consolidations at SEC. She has also managed key SEC projects including, the registration of Capital Market Operators, articulating rules for bonds and equities; mergers, acquisitions and takeovers. Mary holds bachelors and masters degrees in Business Administration from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and Business School, Netherlands respectively and is a 2009 Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria .
