Hon. Barr Bassey Essien
Hon. (Barr) Bassey Essien was the fourth Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly and the first Speaker of the second legislative assembly. Following the end of military rule and the return of democratic rule in Nigeria, the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly (second assembly) was inauguration on Monday, June 2, 1999, and was preceded by a proclamation by the then Governor, Obong (Arc.) Victor Attah authorizing the clerk of the house to convene the first session of the house. The inauguration saw the emergence of Hon. Barr. Bassey Essien, representing Esit Eket/Ibeno State Constituency as the speaker of the House and Hon. Aniefiok Thompson representing Nsit Ubium State Constituency as Deputy Speaker.
Hon. Barr. Bassey Essien was born on September 2, 1964, at Esit Eket. He had his Primary and Secondary Education at Eket. He attended the then University of Cross River State, for his law degree and thereafter the Nigerian Law School for his Bar qualifying examinations Programme. He was in private legal practice before joining politics.
