His Excellency, Arc (Obong) Victor Attah
Father of Modern Akwa Ibom State.
As its second democratically elected governor, he’s the undisputed father of modern Akwa Ibom State. He is a politician’s politician, one of the most respected leaders in the country.
But he is more than a politician. He is a fighter; a fighter for good and just causes.
When the history of the Onshore/Offshore Oil dichotomy is written, his name will be engraved in pure gold. He championed the fight, which resulted in the existing payment of 13% of oil revenue to Akwa Ibom and all other oil producing states.
But it wasn’t always a clean fight. And he wasn’t everybody’s hero. There were stiff opposition, blackmail and detractions. But he stood his ground; convinced that he was spearheading a good cause. Not just for Akwa Ibom but for the entire Niger Delta.
He was driven by his undying love for the state he had devoted his life to serving; the desire to improve the lot of the people.
But he was also suitably prepared to lead at all levels. His good education saw to that. He holds a degree from the Leeds College of Arts and a post graduate diploma in Building Science from Liverpool University. He won a scholarship to study at Columbia University in New York, where he obtained an MA in Advanced Architectural Design and Planning. He also attended the Kennedy Graduate School of Governance at Harvard University.
He has practiced as an architect in the Caribbean, New York and Nigeria and is a former National President of Nigerian Institute of Architects.
He builds people, cities and infrastructure. Among his signature architectural projects are the Ibom Plaza, Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort, Ibom Science Park and the Unity Park in Uyo.
And among the landmarks of his tenure as governor are Ibom Power, Akwa Ibom State University of Technology, the state airport that has been rightly named Victor Attah International Airport. Throw in schools, roads, hospitals and the expansive Shelter Afrique Estate in Uyo and you will see why he commands heartfelt love across the state. For the man who designed the masterplan for Uyo as Citizen Attah, he couldn’t let the opportunity to translate ideas into reality slip when he became governor.
Since leaving office and partisan politics, he has taken on the role of Elder Statesman, frontline defender of the best interest of Akwa Ibom and the Niger Delta and an advocate for true federalism. He just can’t stop fighting for all that is good for his people.
Akwa Ibom Celebrates this 82-year old native of Okop Ndua Erong, in Ibesikpo Asutan local government who has left a big imprint in our history, state and country. Akwa Ibom Celebrates Obong Victor Attah!
