Apostle of Industrialization
He was called Mr Industrialization even during his first campaign to become Governor of Akwa Ibom State in 2015. All campaign publicity materials proclaimed the message of the promise of Industrialization by him. His message was clear: Akwa Ibom must embrace Industrialization and entrepreneurship as a prelude to economic growth.
Years into office as Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel has without fail, kept the promise.
Over 18 manufacturing concerns have been birthed by this administration. Among them are the Jubilee Syringe Manufacturing Company, Africa’s largest syringe manufacturers; Electric Metering Company, first and biggest of its kind in Nigeria, Kings Flour Mills, St. Gabriel’s Coconut Refinery at Mkpat Enin, amongst others.
Governor Udom Emmanuel conscious that power is critical to industrialization and economic growth, has invested a lot in the power sector. His administration has built a 33/11 KVA, 2x 15 MVA injection substation in Uyo and 132x 33 KV, 12x 60 MVA transmission substation at Ekim in Mkpat Enin, aside from launching an ambitious Power for All by December, 2021, an initiative to get electricity into all remaining unserviced communities in the state.
A visionary, he has pursued the Ibom Deep seaport and industrial city project with vigour, fulfilling all the 22 checklists for approval by the Federal Executive Council.
Then there is Ibom Air, his vision, aimed at not only providing a self-made alternative to available air flight services but as a means of a financially rewarding investment which is one of the fastest-growing Airlines in Nigeria. In only 100 days of flying, the airline set a record passenger base of 50,000. The Airline now operates from five Airports, our own Victor Attah International Airport, the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos, the Margaret Ekpotu International Airport, Calabar and the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.
Governor Udom’s government is not all about industrialization. He has impacted on all sectors. In health, a brand new General hospital at Awa, reconstruction and renovation of secondary health facilities at Immanuel Hospital, Eket, St. Luke Hospital, Anua, and others at Etinan, Ekpene Obom and Ikot Okoro in Oruk Anam. He has also achieved optimal utilisation of the Ibom Specialist Hospital.
His strategic management of the COVID 19 pandemic saw the state have one of the lowest fatalities rates in the country. The Isolation centre and PCR laboratory built by the administration have been adjudged one of the best in the country by the World Health Organization and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.
The education sector has seen him continue the free and fair education policy, construction, renovation and reconstruction of 1,578 primary schools across all wards in the state, establishment of the Navy Military School and Army Secondary School and recruitment of 5, O00 teachers. Other sectors have also had a touch of his wand.
The Dakkada Towers, a 21 storey smart building conceived, constructed and completed by the Udom Emmanuel administration is redefining the skyline of the Niger Delta and attracting quality tenants globally.
Governor Udom Emmanuel attended the Secondary Commercial School, Ikot Akpan Ishiet, the School of Basic Studies, Uyo and the University of Lagos where he bagged a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and a Masters degree in corporate Governance from Leeds Metropolitan University, United Kingdom. He would later attend several executive course at INSEAD, France, LBS, United Kingdom, Harvard University, USA etc.
Governor Udom Emmanuel’s calling has been financial management. A Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, ICAN and the Nigeria Institute of Management (Chartered), Governor Udom had worked all his life in the Financial sector, from renowned audit firm Price Water House Coopers to Zenith Bank where he served variously as Executive Director and non-Executive Director of its subsidiaries.
In 2014, he was appointed by then Governor Godswill Akpabio as the Secretary to the State Government. He was elected Governor of Akwa Ibom State in 2015 and re-elected in 2019, he is pursuing yet again, the industrialization goals of his administration through a Completion Agenda.
