Engr. (Rev) E.I.I.Etteh, OFR
The Nigeria Institution of Civil Engineering, NICE, a division of the Nigeria Society of Engineers, in 2015 instituted the Annual Engr( Rev) Etteh Distinguished Lecture Series in honour of their icon, Engr Etteh Ikpong Ikpong Etteh for his pioneering role and immense contribution to the civil engineering industry in Nigeria.
Before Engr Etteh and his friend, the late Lawrence Arokodare founded Etteh Aro and Partners in 1970, structural and civil engineering designs and consultancy were handled by foreign firms, the most prominent of them Ovie Arup. On graduation from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, both of them worked with the same Ovie Arup to gain experience.
Engr Etteh later went to the United Kingdom for further studies, where he bagged a Masters degree ( Highways) in 1969 and a second Masters degree ( Bridges) in 1973, from the University of Surrey.
Etteh Aro and Partners’ break, however, came earlier with an inaugural consultancy project of the rehabilitation of the Benin/Asaba road. From there, the firm went on to become one of the foremost firms of civil and structural engineering designs and consultancy in Nigeria. Among its major projects are the Ibom Hall, Uyo, Nigeria Institute of International Affairs, C& C Towers, the East-West Road, Stallion House, NDDC Headquarters, WAEC new Headquarters, Lagos and the Second Niger bridge.
Engr Etteh has served the old Cross River State and Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria in various capacities including as Chairman of Calabar Cement Company Ltd( CALCEMCO)1975 to 1980, Chairman, Federal Mortgage Finance Company( 1993 to 1994), member( and chairman, Technical sub committee), Ibom International Airport Implementation Committee and various committees and panels on road infrastructure.
The Ibeno born Engr Etteh is a Fellow of the Nigeria Society of Engineers ( 1981), Chairman, Association of Bridges and Structural Engineers, Nigeria chapter ( 1989 to 1998) and Foundation Fellow, Nigeria Academy of Engineering ( 1995). He was conferred with the national honour, Officer of the Federal Republic, OFR, in 2001.
Engr Etteh is also an ordained priest of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria ( ordained 1998). He actually holds a Diploma in Theology from Immanuel College.
He attended the St Patrick’s School, Ifiayong, Holy Trinity School, Mbiakong for his primary education and the Hope Waddel Training Institution, Calabar for his secondary education.
