Engr Edet Amana, a fellow of the Nigeria Society of Engineers, has always been an exceptional fellow.

At the Imperial College( of Science and Technology of the University of London) his brilliance and intelligence came to the fore as he finished a 3 year course in Civil/Structural Engineering in two years bagging a First class and carting away all available academic prizes. He and the late Prof Ayodele Awojobi left bigger shoes for Nigerian students who will come after them.

Popular Accountant JK Randle, in his tribute to him on his 80th birthday, said Amana “scored stratopheric distinctions as an undergraduate..followed by Masters and Doctorate degrees to the astonishment of his world class lecturers.”

Earlier on, at Kings College, Lagos, where he did his Higher School certificate, Amana was best student with all round Distinctions in all subjects.

The lure of the academic world wasn’t strong enough for Amana as he opted for Engineering consultancy. In 1972, he started Amana Consulting Engineers, a firm which has imprints on several major high networth design and construction projects in Nigeria.

The Engineering service arm of his firm held services for AW Chesterton of Boston and Hewlet Packard amongst other big names. In 1981, the firm partnered with Earth Technology Corporation of California and went into geotechnical and geophysical surveying and mapping.

At its peak, Amana’s firm had over 50 engineers, including 10 expartriates in its employ.

A visionary businessman, Amana later diversified into rubber farming and processing; trading in supply for the oil industry; publishing; property and banking.

The silent billionaire was a founding Director of Citibank and served on its Board from 1985 to 2010.

The Urue Offong/Oruko born Engineer is a Fellow of both the Nigeria Institute of Management ( Chartered) and the Institute of International Directors. He is also Past President of both the Association of Consulting Engineers in Nigeria and the Nigeria Academy of Engineering.

A Knight of the Methodist Church, Amana who holds several Chieftaincy titles, recently set up the Edet Amana Foundation to give back to society in the areas of Healthcare, Education and Economic Empowerment.
