They did Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria proud in 2018 when they were named third place winners of the Stockholm Junior Water Prize Competition organised by Stockholm International Water Institute, Stockholm, Sweden. They had emerged first at the national competition and qualifier at the Swedish Embassy, Abuja.

Stockholm Junior Water Prize is a competition for students aged 15 to 20 who have developed school projects that can solve major water challenges. The competition attracts thousands of entries from 38 countries. HRH Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden as the Patron of the prize.

Miss Blessing Umoukpong and Master Iniso Edward, who have only just finished their senior secondary school education at Northern Annang Secondary Commercial School, Utu Etim Ekpo, Etim Ekpo Local Government Area, came third with their idea of water filtration through the use of natural plant filters from coconut fibre.

The duo who have teamed up to form a science club are now awaiting admission into the University of Uyo to study science-related courses and will benefit from a full scholarship awarded by the state government. In the interim, they are exploring ways to scale up this idea for use around the country. They are working closely with Mr Daniel Udiong, their science teacher and coach to explore more ways of using science and our local endowments to solve problems of daily living.
