Arc. Ezekiel Nya-Etok
Apostles of Social Housing Crusader
The expansive Shelter Afrique Estate in Uyo bears eloquent testimony to the power of his dreams. Determined to find a cost-effective way of increasing the housing stock in Nigeria, Ezekiel Nya-Etok, partnered with the Akwa Ibom State Government to attract funding from Shelter Afrique, the Nairobi-based pan-African finance institution exclusively supporting the development of the housing and real estate sector in Africa for the estate project in Uyo. It was Shelter Afrique’s first landmark residential estate financing in Nigeria.
During construction, the project engaged more than 700 indigenous contractors and over 10,000 artisans, labourers, suppliers, petty traders and others. The project was recognised as a national model for poverty alleviation and empowerment in the country and in 2014 earned Nya-Etok the prestigious “Housing Man Of The Year.”
Nya-Etok is chairman of Novone Consults, an architectural firm that is also into property development. He crusades for Social Housing, a term he coined for housing delivery primarily targeted and at low to middle-income earners. Nya-Etok is also a politician and the former National Chairman and governorship aspirant of the Youth Democratic Party of Nigeria (YDP).
Born November 1, 1963, into the family of Chief Jacob Nya in Nsiak Town, Ikot Ekpene, he earned his B.Sc and M.Sc in Architecture degrees from the University of Nigeria. In 2007, Nya-Etok joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), serving as the Chairman of the Ward and Local Government Congress Committee in Borno State. Back in the state, he contested the 2007 governorship primaries under the PDP. In 2011, he officially resigned from the PDP to take up the apolitical Office of The Citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, created as part of his Nigeria First Project. Nigeria First is a platform to mobilize Nigerians to advocate for citizen-centred governance. Nya-Etok served as its director-general.
In 2016, he was instrumental to the founding of Young Democratic Party (YDP) and served as pioneer National Chairman. He contested the 2019 governorship election as YDP’s candidate in the state. YDP was and still is the vanguard of the ‘Not Too Young To Run movement’.
