Air Marshal Nsikak-Abasi Essien Eduok Rtd
Combat Pilot and Statesman
Air Marshal Nsikak Essien Eduok was first appointed Chief of Air Staff in Nigeria on August 27, 1993 but the appointment was reversed a week later. As fate would have it, he was reappointed Chief of Air Staff and member of the Armed Forces Ruling Council, on 30th of March 1996 by General Sani Abacha, a post he held till his retirement in 1999. He previously served as Nigeria’s Minister for Aviation.
Born on July 11, 1947 at Mbak Ekpe, Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area, he attended Lutheran High School, Obot Idim and joined the Nigerian Air Force as a trainee pilot on August 1, 1968. He was commissioned in February 1971 as a Flying Officer. He attended several courses in Nigeria and abroad, including, Advanced and Tactical Flying Training Course, 1971 1973; Aircraft Accident Investigation Course, USA, 1974 1975; MiG-21 Conversion Course, 1975, USSR; Advanced Staff Course, United Kingdom, 1976; MB-339 Flight Training Course, Italy, 1983 1986; Command and Staff College Jaji, 1987; L-39 Flight Training Course, Czechoslovakia; United States Air Force (USAF) Air War College, Alabama, 1991 1992.
Air Marshal Eduok is easily one of the best trained combat pilots the Nigerian Air Force has produced. He has flown various aircraft types within and outside Nigeria, including the L-29, L-39, MiG 15, MiG 17, MiG 21 and the MB-339. This gem of an officer has served in various positions including, Directing Staff, Command and Staff College, Jaji, 1986 1987; Director of Plans, NAF Headquarters, 1989; Director of Operations, NAF Headquarters, 1990; Air Officer Commanding (AOC), Training Command, 1991, among others.
Eduok is an ordained elder of the United Evangelical Church. He has made great contributions to the growth of Akwa Ibom State. He once told reporters, “for instance the 31 local government areas in the state. The Almighty God will be my witness here; I was really critically involved in the creation of 24 out of the 31 that were eventually created. I am not making noise. We are quietly making our contributions”.
