Idongesit Akwa Ibom
He did not only make history as the first indigenous governor, he won the heart of the people when he stepped up to meet the daunting challenges of positioning the state with right infrastructure. From roads to hospitals and schools. And then the state secretariat. Against the backdrop of limited funds, he set his eyes on the goal and delivered on record time.
Born on January 27, 1952 at Ikot Nya in Nsit Ibom LGA, Air Commodore Nkanaga had his primary education at Qua Iboe Mission Primary School, Ikot Nya, Nsit Ibom LGA and his secondary education at Wilcox Memorial Grammar School, Aba between 1964 and1967 and the famous Etinan Institute, 1968-1969. He was admitted into the Nigerian Defence Academy and was commissioned Second Lieutenant in 1973. After his training in PIAGIO -149D aircraft at the Nigerian Airforce Training base Kaduna, the young Nkanga was sent to train on CESSNA T-41, T-37JET and TALON T-38 SUPERSONIC JET at Vance Airforce Base, Oklahoma.
He was later to attend further pilot trainings such as the pilot conversion training on MIG 21 fighter aircraft in USSR; conversion course on C-130 HERCULES aircraft in USA. He was then posted to the Nigerian Airforce Transport Group Lagos as a Squadron Pilot, and later converted on The Gulfstream II and Boeing 727 Executive Aircraft of the Presidency. He attended the Air Command and Staff Course at the Air University Maxwell Airforce Base Montgomery USA in 1985. On return from the US, he was posted to the Command and Staff College as a Directing Staff in the Air Faculty In 1987, from where he was selected for exchange duty at The Ghana Armed Forces Staff College, Accra.
Air Commodore Idongesit Nkanga was appointed as the military governor of Akwa Ibom State in September 1990. As Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Idongesit Nkanga left indelible marks on the landscape of the state. He built the historic Ibom Hall, the State Secretariat, which today bears his name, constructed the IBB way in Uyo; founded the College of Education at Afaha Nsit, among other landmark achievements.
This five star Akwa Ibom Statesman is the National Chairman Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), the Board Chairman, Ibom International Airport, and Chairman, Ibom Air Board. This University of Ibadan Masters degree holder in Political Science (Strategic Studies) was honoured with the traditional title of Asango Iso ldim of Akwa Ibom State.
