D.I.G. UDOM U. EKPOUDOM (Rtd) NPM, Fwc, OON -An officer and a gentleman. Retired Deputy Inspector – General of Police, Udom Udo Ekpoudom was born on May 24, 1953, in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area. He attended Queen of Apostles Seminary, Afaha-Obong, Abak for his secondary and the Holy Family College, Abak for the Higher School education.

Assistant Inspector General of Police, Amba Asuquo, a native of Urue Offong/Oruko in Akwa Ibom state, was born on March 31, 1961. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in English/Literary Studies from the University of Lagos in 1984. AIG Amba was enlisted into the Nigerian Police Force as a Cadet ASP in 1986.

He once sat on the Governing Council of his alma mater, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN as representative of all alumni. That was a very rare privilege but for someone who has been a good ambassador of the institution in learning and in character, it was a fitting decoration.

Prof Sylvia George Akpan

PROFESSOR SYLVIA GEORGE AKPAN – First female medical doctor. Sylvia George (Essien) Akpan is a retired Professor of Anaesthesiology of the University of Calabar, Cross River State is a woman of many firsts. This native of Ikot Obong Ediong, Ikot Ekpene, is the first female medical doctor from present Akwa Ibom State and the first female professor of anaesthesiology from the region.

DR ANIEKEME ANIEFIOK UWAH – Outstanding Medical Doctor. Aside from Dr Aniekeme Aniefiok Uwah, presently the National Publicity Secretary of the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, only two other Akwa Ibom indigenes have had the privilege to serve on the National Officers Committee of the 60 year old body- Dr Edmundson Udo Uyoata Akpabio ( National President 1984 to 1988) and Dr Chris Enoch ( National Deputy Secretary General 2008 to 2010).

Dr Iko Ibanga, OON – The physician and missionary. This December, Pro-Health International, the medical outreach group Dr. Iko Ibanga, OON, co-founded with three other medical professionals turns 29. And as it is customary, he would be leading his colleagues and a team of volunteer medical professionals – specialist doctors, dentists, nurses, pharmacists, medical students, other paramedics and non-health professionals – to some remote location in Nigeria or Africa to deliver free and quality healthcare services.

Prof Dorothy Udo Umoatan has made history as the first female Professor of Law to come out of Akwa Ibom and Cross River States. the Ibiono ibom born lawyer, now an indigene of Mkpat Enin by marriage, made this history after the University of Uyo Senate on Monday 28th September 2020 announced her promotion to the rank of a Professor.

Kate Ekanem

Kate Ekanem – Promoting the Education, Literacy, and Empowerment of Girls in Nigeria. Kate Ekanem is a writer and a Girls’ Rights Activist. Born in Etinan in 1994, she relocated with her father to Lagos two years later following the death of her mother. She started writing at the age of five and today, has a number of publications to her name. Her first travel story, ‘Journey from Kora-Le Berlin’ with the ‘Derive’ crew, Austria, was published online in 2012. It has been translated into French, and other languages.

Professor Isidore Silas Obot – Professor Isidore S. Obot is the founding Director, Centre for Research and Information on Substance Abuse (CRISA), Uyo, Nigeria. He had previously served as a professor and chairperson of Behavioral Health Sciences at the School of Public Health and Policy, Morgan State University, Baltimore, Maryland. He also served as a scientist in the Department of Mental Health and Substance Dependence at the World Health Organization, Geneva, Switzerland, where his responsibilities included the coordination of several international projects on the epidemiology of alcohol use and the prevention of alcohol-related problems.

Prof Etim Moses Essien, NNOM, OFR – World Class Scientist. The Nigeria National Order of Merit, NNOM, is Nigeria’s equivalent of the Nobel Prize. The Chairman of the Governing Board of the Nigeria National Merit Award, organisers of the prize is Prof Etim Moses Essien who himself is a past recipient of the award.

Prof Sunday W Peters – Scholar-Administrator. The lot on who to run the newly established Akwa Ibom State University ( AKSU) fell on Prof Sunday William Peters, a Professor of Petroleum Geology.

Engr. (Rev) E.I.I.Etteh, OFR – Engineering Icon. The Nigeria Institution of Civil Engineering, NICE, a division of the Nigeria Society of Engineers, in 2015 instituted the Annual Engr( Rev) Etteh Distinguished Lecture Series in honour of their icon, Engr Etteh Ikpong Ikpong Etteh for his pioneering role and immense contribution to the civil engineering industry in Nigeria.

Today, we celebrate the men and women who are saddled with the onerous responsibility of making laws for the good of Akwa Ibom. A state can not progress without the right legal and legislative framework and these members of the Seventh Assembly have collectively risen to the challenge of law-making and legislative oversight on the Executive arm of government.

Mfon Udoka – Prolific world-class basketballer. Nigeria made history as the first African country to win a game in women basketball at the 2004 Olympics. That year, the captain of the team was second in the tournament in scoring and rebounding. The captain was Mfon Udoka, an Akwa Ibom daughter who also holds the distinction of leading the team to two Afrobasket wins and winning the Golden Basket award herself. Rt. Hon. Anietie Etuk, the eighth Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, was born May 18, 1961, at Ikot Idem Nsit in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area. He did his primary education at the Primary School, Ikot Eda/Ife in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area between 1968 and 1974. He attended the Apostolic Church Secondary School, Ikot Oku Nsit in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area between 1974 and 1979 for his Secondary Education. Thereafter, he attended the University of Calabar between 1987 and 1991 where he obtained a bachelors degree in Theatre Arts. He also obtained a masters degree in Media Arts/Communication Art from the same University in 2009.

Rt. Hon. Obong Engr. Ignatius Kevin Edet was born May 22, 1963 in Ikot Osukpong, Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area. He attended the Central School, Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area between 1970 and 1976 for his primary education; St. Vincent Secondary School, Oti Oron and Regina Coeli Secondary School, Esene for his secondary education and The Polytechnic, Calabar where he obtained a National Diploma in Electrical/Electronics before proceeding to the University of Port Harcourt for a bachelors degree in Engineering.

Rt. Hon. Nelson Effiong – Senator Nelson Effiong, as he is now addressed, was the sixth speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly. He was a pioneer member of the State House of Assembly, having been elected into the First Assembly in 1992. With the return of civilian democracy, Chief Nelson Effiong was re-elected, and served two terms in the state assembly between 1999 – 2007.

He’s popularly called the father of modern Pentecostalism. And if you lived in the late 70’s you would have been familiar with Goodnews Evangelical Crusade Team in 1975 which traversed the length and breadth of today’s Akwa Ibom and Cross River States to share the good news of the gospel and demonstrate the saving power of God. It is impossible to mention the African technology ecosystem without giving credit to bigwigs like Mark Essien, founder and CEO of Hotels.ng, Africa’s biggest online hotel booking platform. Founded in 2013, Hotels.ng currently has a listing of more than 7,000 hotels in 21 states across Nigeria and has facilitated up to two million hotel reservations since its inception. The platform also employs 150 people and recently successfully raised $1.2 million from Omidyar Network, the investment vehicle of eBay founder, Pierre Omidyar, a seed-stage technology fund.

For the South-South, this great son of Akwa Ibom State first shot to fame in the 70s as the fearless editor of Nigerian Chronicle in Calabar.  Ray Ekpu’s distinctive prose, his perceptive mind and his well-informed analysis soon attracted national attention.  

Senator Eme Ufot Ekaette who represented Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District in the Sixth Senate (2007 – 2011) made her name as a pharmacist. She played outstanding role in the development of pharmacy practice in Nigeria, becoming the first female national president of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria in 1977.

Fr Uwem Akpan, a Catholic priest of the Jesuit order, announced himself to the world with his breathtaking and emotionally charged book Say You’er One of Them, a book of five stories published in 2008 which won the 2009 Commonwealth Writers Prize and the 2009 Beyond Margins Award. It made the Caine Prize For African Writing finalist in 2007 and was finalist for Los Angeles Time Art Seidengaum Award for First Fiction. Father Uwem is a writer with a riveting narrative grip; offshoot of his Annang ancestral folktale style, which he said he got introduced early in life by his mother while growing up.

Born November 23, 1949, to parents from Ifa Ikot Okpon, Etoi, Uyo Local Government Area, Distinguished Senator Helen Esuene is associated more with Eket, her home by marriage to the Late Brigadier Udoakagha Jacob Esuene, Military Governor of the former South Eastern State.

Inyene Essien 14, plans to study Artificial Intelligence and Robotics but for now, she’s focused on golf and has been listed as one of the 30 female sports game changers of 2020 by the Malala Foundation of Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai. Iyene has captained the Nigerian team to the All African Junior championship.

Williams Troost-Ekong is a Nigerian professional footballer with mixed parentage of an Akwa Ibom father and a Dutch mother, Eleanor Troost. Born September 1st, 1993 in Haarlem, Netherlands, he represented the Dutch teams at various age grades before choosing to represent Nigeria at senior international level.

Vincent Enyeama is the most celebrated footballer from Akwa Ibom State and the most capped Nigerian footballer of all times. Enyeama launched his illustrious playing career in 1999 with Ibom Stars, featuring in 56 memorable matches. He moved to Enyimba Football Club in 2001, played in 100 games for the club scoring 10 goals earning himself the rare distinction as one of the few goalkeepers with the ability to score goals.
